Last week we almost positively named Belle Fourche, SD as the geographic center of North America. Then last night after the show we bumped into the Squeeky Wheel (KAUR disc jock that takes over studio after Flowerman and Oil Can exit). He was actually in Belle Fourche, SD last week. The Wheel told us that Rugby, ND is actually the geopgraphic center of North America and that Belle Fourche, SD is the geographic center of the United States (if you include Hawaii and Alaska). So what does this have to do with gardening?
Last night we talked a lot about heirloom seed vs. hybrid seed culture. We talked a little about Charles Ingalls vs. A.C. Slater in a cage fight. We talked about virus tulips. We even talked about National Stuffed Mushroom (fungus) Day, February 4. Stay tuned for the podcast. So what does this have to do with rock & roll?

Flowerman, there is no easy way to shoot this cat. It requires elucidation and/or interpretation. Are we talking geographic or geodetic center? Are we accounting for Pangea? What about the commies studying the arctic ice shelves? According to the U.S Geological Survey (which warns that "there is no generally accepted definition of a geographic center"), the center of the continent of North America is 6 miles west of Balta, ND. As Balta is so small, Rugby (22 mi. NE) calls itself the center of the continent.
The geographical center of the lower 48 states lies outside of Lebanon, Kansas, in the middle of a hog farm.
The geographical center of all 50 states is located 17 miles west of Castle Rock, South Dakota, 20 miles north of Belle Fourche.
The geographic center of South Dakota is 8 miles NE of Pierre or somewhere between Pierre and Blunt.
Here's a website;

Perhaps we refer this one to the corporate office, which is incidentally located at the geographic center of Dolton, SD.

But moving on, "There can be no doubt that a society rooted in the garden is more stable than
one rooted in pavements."
-paraphrased from my good friend Aldo Leopold.

Yes, but Pavement's Cut Your Hair is still the geographical center on my top 10 favorite jams list, give or take.
